The composition utilizes the classic Vanitas motif—the prominent human skull—to symbolize mortality and the transient nature of earthly pleasures. However, instead of simple decay, the skull is intricately formed from the very figures who represent the indulgence: their flowing robes and intertwined bodies sculpt the bone structure. This illustrates how the obsession with the ephemeral becomes the dominant, consuming reality. The figures surrounding the base are engaged in a frenzied, seemingly unconscious dance, embodying the destructive energy of unguided passion. The setting, a classical Roman or Greek architectural ruin, hints at the collapse of order, reason, and aesthetic ideals due to moral decay.
Technique: The work is executed using Traditional Oil Painting techniques, focusing on a Classical Realism approach. I employed multiple, thin layers (glazing) to achieve the luminous quality of the figures’ drapery and the subtle tonal transitions within the skull. The limited palette—predominantly ochres, golds, and pale ivory whites—enhances the sense of dreamlike antiquity and decay, drawing the viewer's focus solely to the dramatic form and subject matter.
Ideally paintings don't require much care as its a vertical surface, hence dust doesn't settle quite easily. You can gently dry dust the painting once in a month. You can also gently use a slightly damp cloth and dab it gently over the surface to capture the dust particles. You can do this once in 6 months.
Please do not use soap water, detergent, disinfectants or any chemicals over the painting as it might dissolve the colors. Paper and cloth paintings are usually framed with a glass on top, hence the artwork will remain intact. You would just need to clean the glass. Always keep artworks away from direct sunlight and also from walls having water leakage problem, - as both can damage it.
