This painting is one of my series on Floral Alphabet. F is for Frangipani Frangipani, or Plumeria, are one of the sweetest flowers known to humankind. These are native to tropical and subtropical climates. They are found across Southern and Central America and Southern Asia. More than 300 varieties are known. These beautiful flowers come in white, cream, pink, yellow and red colors. The sweet yet powerful fragrance typically gets stronger at night. The name Frangipani comes from the name of an Italian nobleman who used these flowers to make perfume. Frangipani, or Plumeria symbolism across cultures is overwhelmingly positive. They usually represent beauty, charm and grace. They also represent creation and flawlessness. They symbolise love. It is not uncommon to use the Frangipani flower as a metaphor for the beloved. A case in point, the iconic Marathi love song, "Chafa bolena". The poetess rues that her beloved, the Chafa, the Marathi name for this flower, is not responding to her pleas. Plumerias also symbolise immortality and are used in deity worship. In fact, it would not be a stretch to say that these marvellous flowers stand for everything that is good in this world!
