This painting is one of my series on Floral Alphabet. I is for Ixia Also known as the Corn Lily or African Corn Lily, Ixia is a native of South Africa. It is a cousin of our previous guest, the Gladiolus. Ixia is a Greek word referring to these flowers' sticky, sweet nectar that draws birds and bees to them. The six petaled, star shaped blooms sit atop a tall, slender leafless green stem. The common colors are pink, orange, violet, crimson and many variations of white. All have a contrasting center. A very rare combination is blue green petals with a violet center. Due to their bright hues and stark shape, these blooms are a favorite choice to add a pop of color to floral arrangements. Ixias symbolise a feeling of happiness, another reason to include them in bouquets.
