Title: Reflections in Ben-Day: Radha and Krishna
Gallery Note
This striking digital composition presents a vibrant dialogue between classical Indian iconography and mid-century Western commercial art. Drawing direct inspiration from traditional Rajasthani and Madhubani miniature painting traditions, the artwork depicts the divine couple, Radha and Krishna, in a lush, stylized pastoral setting. Krishna’s iconic cerulean skin, ornate golden crown (mukut), and Radha’s elegantly draped crimson attire honor historical devotional portraiture, while their elongated, almond-shaped eyes evoke classic regional folk motifs.
However, the piece subverts traditional expectations by filtering this ancient imagery through the lens of 20th-century Pop Art. The entire composition is built upon a meticulous foundation of Ben-Day dots and bold, graphic black outlines, explicitly reminiscent of classic comic book printing and the iconic style of Roy Lichtenstein.
The insertion of a narrative speech bubble—"LOVELY REFLECTION, ISN'T IT?"—introduces a playful, secular casualness to a traditionally sacred subject. This textual element shifts the focus to the mirror held between them, which serves as a meta-visual device. The reflection within the mirror captures the essence of their divine union, yet it is rendered in the same flat, mass-produced aesthetic as the nature surrounding them. By synthesizing the spiritual romanticism of Indian folk traditions with the mass-media irony of Pop Art, the work challenges the boundaries between sacred art and commercial culture, high art and popular kitsch.
