This painting is inspired by the Darpana Sundari, a famous 12th-century stone sculpture located in the Chennakeshava Temple in Belur, Karnataka, India. The sculpture is one of the many Madanikas (celestial nymphs or bracket figures) that adorn the temple. It depicts a beautiful lady looking into a hand mirror (darpan) and is often thought to be preparing for a dance performance. Local tradition suggests that these graceful figures, including Darpana Sundari, were inspired by the beauty and elegance of Queen Shantala Devi, the wife of the Hoysala King Vishnuvardhana. In Indian artistic traditions, the mirror held by the lady is not just a sign of vanity but also a symbol of self-reflection, introspection, and clarity. The Chennakeshava Temple was commissioned by King Vishnuvardhana in 1117 CE to commemorate a military victory. The original sculptures are meticulously carved from soapstone, a material that allowed the ancient artisans to achieve incredible levels of detail in the jewelry and clothing.
This painting is a tribute to the artist who carved beauty out of stone.
Ideally paintings don't require much care as its a vertical surface, hence dust doesn't settle quite easily. You can gently dry dust the painting once in a month. You can also gently use a slightly damp cloth and dab it gently over the surface to capture the dust particles. You can do this once in 6 months.
Please do not use soap water, detergent, disinfectants or any chemicals over the painting as it might dissolve the colors. Paper and cloth paintings are usually framed with a glass on top, hence the artwork will remain intact. You would just need to clean the glass. Always keep artworks away from direct sunlight and also from walls having water leakage problem, - as both can damage it.
