In 'The Fallen Swan,' I wanted to explore the darker, more unsettling side of beauty. The traditional image of a swan is one of grace and elegance, but here I've twisted that archetype. This swan is not serene; it is a creature of raw, almost grotesque, power. Its long neck is coiled, its beak is filled with sharp, jagged teeth, and its eyes—large and haunting—stare out with a sense of bewilderment and pain. The wings are fractured and stiff, as if they were once majestic but are now broken, and the feet are more like predatory claws than graceful webs.
The background, a swirling mix of deep reds and browns, creates a sense of turmoil and a foreboding atmosphere. It is the color of old blood and rusted iron, a dramatic stage for a creature that is no longer pure. The stark contrast between this fiery background and the pale, textured body of the swan makes the figure appear both vulnerable and menacing.
I used a dense, crosshatched texture on the swan's body and wings, which suggests a skin of scales or chainmail, something armored and yet fragile. This technique serves as a metaphor for the many layers of suffering and trauma that can turn a beautiful creature into a wounded, almost monstrous, being. Ultimately, 'The Fallen Swan' is a tragic portrait of lost innocence and a reflection on how suffering can contort even the most graceful of beings.
Ideally paintings don't require much care as its a vertical surface, hence dust doesn't settle quite easily. You can gently dry dust the painting once in a month. You can also gently use a slightly damp cloth and dab it gently over the surface to capture the dust particles. You can do this once in 6 months.
Please do not use soap water, detergent, disinfectants or any chemicals over the painting as it might dissolve the colors.
