This painting is part of my ongoing series on Floral Alphabet. I shall be making a series of 26 paintings of flowers, one for each letter of the alphabet. This painting is of a Gladiolus flower. The name Gladiolus comes from the Latin word for Gladius, or sword. Additionally, it is also known as Xiphius, derived from the Greek word Xiphos also meaning sword! Just a look at its leaves is enough to tell why it is so named! Grown all over the world, in literally thousands of varieties, these trumpet shaped blooms on tall stalks, come in all colors of the rainbow. Gladioli express strength of character, remembrance, faithfulness, and moral integrity. The swords symbolism also conveys infatuation, with the blade like leaves piercing the heart of the recepient!
