In 'The Cage,' I wanted to explore the idea of being trapped by one's own nature. The title refers to the swan-like creature's body, which is coiled into a circular, almost self-enclosed form. This shape is both a protective barrier and a prison, a cage it has built for itself. The small, skeletal hand reaching out from within suggests a desperate attempt to escape, but the creature's beak is closed, a silent barrier against the outside world.
The creature's expression is ambiguous. The large, mesmerizing eye is wide with a mix of fear and an unsettling calm, while the beak is in a subtle, almost eerie smile. This duality represents the complex emotions of being trapped—there is pain, but also a certain resignation or acceptance of one's fate.
I used a dense, crosshatched texture on the creature's body, which gives it an ancient, almost rock-like appearance. This reinforces the feeling of being in a timeless, inescapable state. The surrounding colors, a deep, earthy red, create a sense of being in a suffocating, hostile environment. Ultimately, 'The Cage' is a tragic meditation on the human condition—the things we build to protect ourselves that end up trapping us, and the struggle to find freedom even when we are our own jailers.
Ideally paintings don't require much care as its a vertical surface, hence dust doesn't settle quite easily. You can gently dry dust the painting once in a month. You can also gently use a slightly damp cloth and dab it gently over the surface to capture the dust particles. You can do this once in 6 months.
Please do not use soap water, detergent, disinfectants or any chemicals over the painting as it might dissolve the colors. Paper and cloth paintings are usually framed with a glass on top, hence the artwork will remain intact. You would just need to clean the glass. Always keep artworks away from direct sunlight and also from walls having water leakage problem, - as both can damage it.
