In 'The Cocoon,' I wanted to explore the cyclical nature of life, death, and transformation, but through a darker, more surreal lens. The central figure, a grotesque swan-like creature, is curled into a tight, fetal position, as if in a state of suspended animation or painful rebirth. The title refers to this self-enclosed form, which could be a protective shell or a prison. The large, mesmerizing eye and jagged beak hint at a primal, unnerving intelligence. A small, human-like figure is visible within the creature’s form, suggesting a fragile life or a soul trapped within.
The background, a swirling mix of deep reds, browns, and ochre, creates a visceral, organic feel, as if the creature is nestled within a womb of earth or blood. This palette evokes a sense of both warmth and decay, a duality that is central to the piece.
I used a dense, crosshatched texture on the creature's body, which adds to the feeling of a hardened, ancient being. This technique makes the creature appear both armored and fragile at the same time. Ultimately, 'The Cocoon' is a meditation on the painful process of change and the vulnerability of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming forces.
Ideally paintings don't require much care as its a vertical surface, hence dust doesn't settle quite easily. You can gently dry dust the painting once in a month. You can also gently use a slightly damp cloth and dab it gently over the surface to capture the dust particles. You can do this once in 6 months.
Please do not use soap water, detergent, disinfectants or any chemicals over the painting as it might dissolve the colors. Paper and cloth paintings are usually framed with a glass on top, hence the artwork will remain intact. You would just need to clean the glass. Always keep artworks away from direct sunlight and also from walls having water leakage problem, - as both can damage it.
